Point locations are to be collected in the field with mapping grade GPS units.
Geodatabase Development – This feature class was developed for the Structures section of Baltimore County Public Works. Schema research was done by looking at existing databases for retaining walls and comparing them with each other to determine like attribute fields. We then sat down with Justin Bernd, the lead support staff, and compiled a list of attribute fields and domain values to be included. We also gave consideration to expected Cityworks attributes and generic global attributes and included them in schema as well. The general location of the retaining wall was deemed acceptable, so a point feature class was used rather than a line. The immediate goal of the Structures section is to locate existing retaining walls in the field with mapping grade GPS units and collect attributes needed for entry into the Structure Asset Management system (SAM). The Structures section acknowledged that this schema is subject to change down the road as their program objectives shift from general inventory for SAM to asset maintenance.
The initial point collection will be done in the field by the Structures section with mapping grade GPS and include the collection of the following physical and conditional data: a textual location description, the lifecycle status, the facility being protected by the retaining wall, the wall height, length, material and type, and the condition of the retaining wall. The ownership and maintenance fields may or may not be populated in the field as these fields may require more research back in the office. Coordinate fields will be calculated via the 'calculate geometry' tool within ArcMap. Certain generic asset fields like install date, rehab date, and warranty date will largely be left null unless a design plan exists. The condition data collected in the field by the Structures section will differ from the condition fields required by Cityworks. These Cityworks condition fields will be left null until the rules for calculating the condition score are defined.
